HP Server Brings Mac & PC Together
MediaSmart at Your Service
Hewlett-Packard will be unveiling a home server that serves both Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac computers. With more folks becoming interested in setting up a home network, and a majority of those people running at least one computer/laptop/netbook/smartphone from both sides, the HP MediaSmart Servers will help unite the two (or more as may be the case).
And while the embracing of two opposing cultures does lend itself to some healthy Mac/Windows jokes, we'll spare you. Even without the dual (or is it duel?) compatibility the server hosts some good specs:
The HP MediaSmart Server model ex485 will have 750GB of hard drive space for $599. The ex487 model will have 1.5TB ("Terabyte, it's the new Gigabyte") for $749. If 1.5TB isn't enough, HP says the drives will be able to add/expand to reach up to 9TB. They run on an Intel Celeron processor with a complimentary 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 DRAM.
If all those numbers and acronyms didn't get you confused, here's a few more. The server will be at CES 2009 in Las Vegas (Hall 3, booth 31112), and will be available for pre-order on Jan. 5, 2009.
Those looking for some hearty PC/Mac competition will note that HP again lends itself more to Microsoft than Apple, as it utilizes the Microsoft Windows Home Server platform (and will be at CES rather than MacWorld). We're excited to see this and many other great products "coming together" at CES next week, but of course you knew that already if you've read these related blog posts:
