Intel Pressured to Postpone Calpella Processor
There is something depressing about buying a new laptop and knowing it was outdated before it was even placed on the Best Buy shelf. This evidence is even more apparent as Intel prepares to launch its newest laptop Centrino processor, Calpella, next summer.Even though for the first time in history notebook sales surpassed desktop sales, vendors are claiming that a stand still economy and emerging netbook market is contributing to a slump in overall laptop/notebook sales, leaving them stuck with laptops with (old) Centrino 2 processors.
Afraid to be stuck with "old" technology and inventory, vendors (you know, the Dells, HPs and Toshibas of the world) are begging Intel to postpone the release of the new processor until Fall 09. Okay, so maybe begging is an exaggeration, but they are saying their "pretty pleases."
In college I worked at a movie theater and it is common practice to sell the oldest candy first and the newer stuff later. This is exactly what laptop vendors are trying to do; sell you the older candy first and ask (bribe) Intel to postpone the newest candy release when it is more convenient for them. (Word of advice: Next time you get Goobers ask for the ones closest to the front of the glass case.)
Hopefully, Intel thinks only of its own bottom line and sticks to their original Calpella release schedule, really putting the screws to the greedy vendors that think they can filter product to the stores and consumer when they feel it's most beneficial to them.
What's the worst that will happen? The vendors boycott Intel and the Calpella processor? Yeah, right. The vendors will fold, buy the new processor, liquidate the old Centrino 2 models and the earth will continue to rotate on its axis.
Even though I know the laptop I just bought is outdated, I don't want to know it's outdated only because HP had overstock.
