The performance of your MacBook Pro all depends on how much you upgrade it. The base 13-inch Retina display model comes with 128GB of solid state drive storage capacity (SSD) and an Intel core i5 processor that boasts speeds up to 2.5GHz.

If you are choosing to upgrade your laptop, you have to make that decision at the point of purchase. With MacBook Pros, you cannot simply swap out hard drives like you can with some other laptops. You can upgrade your SSD from 128GB to 256GB, 512GB or 768GB.

You can upgrade your memory from 8GB of RAM on the base model to 16GB. You can also upgrade your i5 processor to an i7 for 2.7GHz of processor speed and turbo boost up to 3.8GHz if you need the extra performance. You should keep in mind that all of these upgrades to do not come cheap, but if you want the extra storage and performance, they are well worth it.

Though this isn’t considered a gaming computer, the upgraded model of the MacBook Pro comes with an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card as opposed to just an Intel HD Graphics 4000 card that you will find on the base model. The GT 650M is a mid-range graphics card that can handle most gaming situations without any lagging or sluggish play.

Even though the MacBook Pro is fast and powerful, it won’t eat up battery life quickly. You can get up to seven hours of use on one battery charge with this laptop, which is among the best.

The MacBook Pro has slimmed down and lightened up significantly from generations of the past. In the age where it seems that all laptop computers are going down the ultrabook road to slimmer and sleeker computers, the MacBook Pro decided to do the same. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display weighs only 3.57 pounds, which makes it one of the lightest laptops we’ve reviewed. This is a pound less than last year’s MacBook Pro model.

At three-quarters of an inch thick, the MacBook is slimmest laptop we reviewed. To achieve a mini laptop design, however, there had to be some compromises.

You will notice on the new MacBook Pro Retina display model that there isn’t an optical drive for CDs or DVDs. This is part of the reason that this laptop is even slimmer than before. Even though it is hard to believe, much like floppy disks of the 1980s, CDs are on their way to becoming entirely obsolete. It might irk some people that there isn’t an optical drive available, but between downloadable drivers, online music services and streaming video applications, it becomes apparent there isn’t much need to include a bulky optical drive.

The new Retina display model is really something special, boasting screen resolution up to 2880 x 1800 pixels. This is by far the sharpest screen resolution you are going to find on the laptop market. Along with a stunning display, this laptop comes with a 720p built-in HD webcam.

There are plenty of ports to go around on the MacBook Pro. This laptop comes equipped with two thunderbolt ports for high-speed data transfer, two USB 3.0 ports, an SDXC card slot and an HDMI port that is featured on the Retina display models. You will not find VGA or USB 2.0 connectors on this laptop computer.

Another port you will not find on the MacBook Pro Retina display model is Ethernet. The non-Retina versions still have an Ethernet port. Again, Apple must have felt that with Bluetooth and wireless technologies, adding an extra port for Ethernet was unnecessary. If you don’t have Wi-Fi, Apple makes Thunderbolt to LAN adapters, which you will have to purchase separately.

Getting help from Apple isn’t as easy as some other companies make it. Apple provides phone support for your Mac, but it is time consuming. The company site offers user forums, and you can submit a support ticket requesting an Apple representative to call you back. There is no email support from Apple, so you are likely better off going into a local store and talking to a specialist. The MacBook Pro comes with a one-year warranty.
