Dell Adamo XPS Full Specs and Pricing Released

How can you help but be fascinated by the exceedingly thin Dell Adamo XPS? Even if you have a perfectly serviceable laptop, the thought of having something one centimeter thin to do the same job has to be intriguing. After the initial shock at seeing the form factor, my next thought was “Well, they can’t pack any good hardware inside that thing and it’s going to be ridiculously expensive, so I can forget about it.” Then Dell released the full specs and the pricing info, proving me wrong on both accounts. Great, now I want one again.

Dell confirmed that the Adamo XPS would have a 13.4-inch LED-backlit screen capable of displaying widescreen in 720p HD. Inside there will be a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, GS45 integrated graphics, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 128GB storage and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Let’s be clear here, these specs aren’t going to break any records, not even close. The processor is so-so, the graphics processing will be mediocre, and there isn’t a lot of storage space. But it’s not bad either, and frankly I don’t know how they fit it all in there. And I’m stunned that they packed 4GB of RAM in there. I thought for sure they’d just put in 2GB and call it good. And you get all that for $1799. That’s pricey, sure, but I expected the Adamo XPS to be well over $2000, so it’s another pleasant surprise.

Also included is WiFi, Bluetooth, a DisplayPort jack, two USB ports and a battery rated for 2 hours and 36 minutes of use. Granted, that’s not much, but you can also upgrade to a better battery rated to last 5 hours and 17 minutes. There is no optical drive, but you can order external DVD and Blu-ray drives as well as external hard drives in 250GB and 500GB. But remember, if you need that kind of storage, there’s no point in having an ultrathin laptop.

And that’s ultimately the point: The only reason you’d buy this is for the extreme thinness of it all. There are better performing laptops for less money, but none of them are even close to this thin.

And I still want one.
