First, a note about panel technology. There are three panel types to be aware of: In-Plane Switching (IPS), Vertical Alignment (VA) and Twisted Nematic (TN). IPS panels currently boast the best panel technology. TN monitors have much lower-quality color reproduction and narrow viewing angles. VA panels are designed to replace TN panels, and the VA panels make good on their claims to improve on TN LCD technology. However, IPS outshines both. So, why would you even be interested in a monitor that does not use IPS? There are two reasons. One, IPS is typically more expensive and two, the difference will most likely only be noticeable if you compare them side by side. Those reasons make VA monitors very attractive to anyone who does not feel obligated to "keep up with the Joneses."
The BenQ GW2450 monitor utilizes the VA panel technology. With VA panels, you get higher quality color reproduction and a wider viewing angle. However, you will lose some of that color clarity when you view the monitor from those wider angles. In addition, VA panels typically have slower response times. However, BenQ has streamlined the VA technology so that this monitor has response times are better than average VA panel, though gamers may notice some blurring during actions sequences.
The BenQ GW2450 can put out up to 250 candelas per square meter (cd/m2). The typical contrast ratio is 5,000:1, and the dynamic contrast ratio goes up to 20,000,000:1. This 24-inch monitor has a resolution of 1080p and LED backlighting to help improve color reproduction. We also want to point out that the response time is up to 4 milliseconds on this monitor, rather than the much slower times that are typical for this panel type.
So far, everything about the BenQ GW2450 looks good, but here we come to two features that could be improved. The first is the high amount of power consumption. One design flaw is that the positional adjustment of the screen only consists of tilting; the height cannot be adjusted. Thankfully, the second flaw can be somewhat remedied by another feature that this monitor has the ability mount it to the wall at whatever height pleases you. In addition, BenQ has included built-in speakers so that you do not necessarily have to get your own.
A nice selection of connections is always a benefit on a monitor, since the connections found on your graphics card vary. In this case, the BenQ GW2450 comes with the three most popular connections to accommodate your needs. The first is an HDMI port, the second is a DVI port and the third is a VGA port. Both HDMI and DVI have HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) support so you will not have issues playing files with this copy protection. Without HDCP support, you would not be able to play some files purchased online, especially if you buy content from the iTunes Store.
Aside from the display connections, the BenQ GW2450 comes with a USB hub that provides four additional USB ports right on the monitor. This is a convenient feature for anyone needing additional ports that are easily accessible. Depending on your setup, sometimes it is difficult or time consuming to access the back of your computer, and if your PC does not have front USB ports, that is what you are stuck having to do. However, with this built-in hub, you can easily access the ports to plug in headphones, a keyboard, a mouse, a webcam, flash card or any other USB device.
Should there be any manufacturer defects on your BenQ GW2450, you have a one-year warranty that covers you.
