Acer Planning to Launch Notebook with 3D Screen
Even though there really isn't a lot of demand for it, companies still seem to think 3D screens will sell electronics. The latest of such companies is Acer, who will be bringing a laptop with a 3D screen to market as early as October.According to DigiTimes, Acer's 3D notebook will be a 15.6 inch machine that runs Windows 7, which explains why it won't be out until late October. Campbell Kan, vice president of Acer's mobile computing business unit, said that the 3D notebook will be able to convert 2D images to 3D and will also play 3D formatted movies.
Obviously, Acer is trying to capitalize on the movie industry's push toward 3D movies, hoping that more 3D movies will make their 3D netbook a hot commodity. Currently you'll need stereoscopic glasses (basic 3D glasses) to see the images in 3D, but DigiTimes asserts that Acer is working on a model that won't require glasses. Are they working a deal with the Alioscopy people that we saw at CES?
Frankly, the whole thing seems misguided. 3D technology just isn't good enough to blend into the background of our entertainment. So I question the push toward 3D that all these companies are making. Do people really want to wear goggles while they use their computer. And why aren't companies paying closer attention to other technologies that are more versatile and require no headache-inducing glasses, like the head tracking VR tech that we've seen demoed for over a year?
