Dell Announces Price, Special Latch for Ultrathin Adamo XPS

Remember gawking at the photos of the impossibly thin Adamo XPS that Dell unveiled earlier this month? Well now you can gawk at the incredibly thick price for the device. Dell has let a few more details about the device slip, including the news that this little wonder, a laptop 1 centimeter thick, will cost you $2000. Wow.
Of course, you can’t expect anything cheaper than that. Getting all the components to pack into a frame that thin isn’t cheap. Lets’ be clear here, the Dell Adamo XPS is intended to be a luxury laptop. I’m betting Dell hasn’t been able to pack fantastic specs into that thin profile, so you won’t be buying it for the performance (if you buy it at all). You’ll be buying it to say you’ve got an uber-thin laptop.
And despite the luxury price tag, we can’t help but love such a piece of engineering. It sounds like Dell has managed to put quite a few bells and whistles into it too. For instance, an article in Business Week has revealed the Adamo XPS will come with a “heat-sensing strip on the lip that, when swiped with a finger, glows white and automatically opens the aluminum lid.” Sounds fancy. Of course, it could be utilitarian. What if it’s so thin you can’t get a finger under the screen to lever it up, requiring some fancy pop-up latch? Either way, I want to use my finger on it.
We’ll have to wait for more details on the specs before deciding how cool/worthless it really is. The good news is that we won’t have to wait long. The Adamo XPS is slated for official release next to Windows 7 this Thursday (will Windows 7 even fit in this thing?), so we can expect full details in a few days.
