Sony VAIO P Unlikely to Dip Below $1000

Those in the US awaiting the release of the Sony VAIO P, the notebook-powered, netbook-sized ultraportable may have to wait even longer—or renew their passports and book a trip to Hong Kong.

After a “typo” on the Amazon UK site was corrected, the likelihood of a sub-$1000 VAIO P has gone from crossed fingers to clenched fists. And now, with the Sony VAIO P recently being spotted for sale in a Hong Kong for around $2,200, even the lowest-spec models will probably have a few hundred dollars to cushion them above the $1000 mark.

This, coming in the wake of industry-wide consumer electronic price deflation and Sony’s own share devaluation and tanking market performance, has many in a huff as they wonder whether they should go for another wallet-friendlier ultraportable or simply wait for Sony to meet them half way.

Though market forecasts are still likely to produce deflation in consumer electronics goods, whether or not Sony will drop its prices on its VAIO P models is anyone’s guess. But, if they want to learn from one of the many mistakes they have committed in the last 3 years, they really should.
